“America’s Got Talent” The Silhouettes came to Millikin on February 7th. Who are The Silhouettes and what did you miss of their performance?
In 2009, Lynne Waggoner-Patton formed The Silhouettes in Colorado, and continues to direct their performances to this day. In 2011, The Silhouettes went on “America’s Got Talent”, and finished in second. Since then they have appeared on the “America’s Got Talent Finale” in 2016 and In 2019 they received the Golden Buzzer on “America’s Got Talent: The Champions.”
Although they are primarily based in Denver, Colorado, The Silhouettes have traveled all around the world to show off their exciting performance to audiences. They have appeared in commercials, film, TV, music videos and performed for nonprofit organizations.
The Silhouettes use dancing, pictures, and light to create these images that tell a story.
The use of light during the Silhouettes’ performance is very intelligent and intentional. Dancers use a trick of perception by standing closer to the light to make bigger shapes while the subjects of that piece stood further away to appear smaller. This perception tricks the brain into believing that the people aren’t making up the shapes but rather the shapes are just there.
During these stories, the screen is constantly changing to pictures and videos. The times of day, situation, and clips make it easy to follow along with, and the words that are displayed between every piece give the audience a good idea of what to expect.
When watching The Silhouettes perform, it is obvious that they are not only good dancers, they are storytellers. Their performance features shocking teamwork and an intense athleticism that is only mastered through practice and hard work. This skill is only shown off further through the lack of seeing facial expressions. These dancers are not able to show their emotions through their face, and instead they have to show it off using their body language. From the beginning until the end, it was obvious that these dancers had high energy that carried them through the show and conveyed what their faces were not able to.
The Silhouettes’ performance was focused on many themes, such as love between families, significant others, and pets. A few of the performances were based on respecting veterans who fought for their country and realizing what this sacrifice and honor means. The theme of love was very apparent throughout the entire performance and the audience was very receptive to the comedic jokes as well as the heavy storylines.
The Silhouettes are amazing storytellers who have an excellent use of light and are very thoughtful when making their stories. Their owner, Lynne Waggoner-Patton asks her audiences to donate to homeless shelters and pet shelters if they are able to. They hope to make a difference all around the world, one performance at a time, and that people are inspired to spread love to those around them.
