Demogorgon Makeup Tutorial

Prep time: 120+ min

Application: 30-40 min

What you will need: A clay mold of your face, wire, masking tape, liquid latex, flour, food coloring (red and black), Ellimorph crystals (white), yarn (red), varnish (clear), fake blood, and paint (red, purple, white, beige, and black)

If you’ve finished watching the Netflix Original Stranger Things, you’ve probably had the Demogorgon’s blood-thirsty face in your mind at least once. It’s a disgusting, carnivorous creature – perfect for the Halloween scare! So, here’s how to make a Demogorgon mask, as shown in a video tutorial done by Youtuber Ellimacs SFX Makeup.

Constructing the mouth pieces:

  1. Take out the wire and masking tape, then fold the wire in half. Twist the wire pieces around each other to form a loop at one end, then fold the wire in half again.
  2. Next, place masking tape around the U-shaped wire to make a flat surface. Repeat steps one and two four more times.

Creating the mouth goo:

  1. Cut the yarn into two-inch pieces and tear them apart. Put aside.
  2. In a glass dish, mix liquid latex with red food coloring until a pink color is achieved, then add flour to the mix until it looks goopy and chunky.
  3. Spoon the mixture onto the mouth pieces, then with a separate container of liquid latex and food coloring, smooth the mixture around the edges with your finger.
  4. Add yarn pieces for texture, then smooth the edges again.

Making the teeth:

  1. Heat up a glass of water to 62 degrees and pour about 90 grams of Ellimorph crystals inside.
  2. Once the crystals turn clear, they will stick together. Spoon them out and roll them in a ball with your hands.
  3. Form the ball into a snake and flatten it into a belt shape.
  4. Cut the round end-pieces of the Ellimorph belt, then cut triangles along the belt.
  5. While the mouth pieces are still wet, attach the teeth where desired.

Mask-making:

  1. Tape the mouth pieces to your face mold with masking tape.
  2. For the center of the mouth, mix red and black food coloring with liquid latex in a dish to get a darker red color. Add flour.
  3. Put pieces of clay over the eyes of the mold, then spoon the dark red mixture all over the face of the mold and towards the mouth pieces.
  4. Poke holes where the nostrils are and add teeth to the center mouth. Leave mask to dry overnight.

Finishing touches:

  1. After the mask dries, cut off excess tape and wire.
  2. Remake the liquid latex and flour mixture, this time without food coloring. Spoon it around the outside of the mouth pieces and then use liquid latex to smooth it down.
  3. Add varnish all over the inside flaps and center mouth. When dried, brush over the outside with flour and gently peel the latex from the mold. Make sure to apply more flour as you peel, so it won’t stick to itself.
  4. After peeling the mask off, add more flour all over. Pull out the clay pieces covering the mold’s eye sockets and remove remaining latex, then poke holes in the mask’s nostrils.
  5. Place the mask back onto the mold and with a small paintbrush, paint the center mouth and the mouth piece’s edges black and purple. Using a thicker brush, paint the outside of the mouth pieces and the latex beige.
  6. Varnish the inside of the mask and set to dry.

Mask mechanics:

  1. Put on a bald cap and paint it white. Then paint red and purple veins and black to shade.
  2. Cover your face in liquid latex, careful not to get it near your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  3. Place the mask on your face and add more liquid latex on the edges of the mask to secure it to your face.
  4. Bend the mouth pieces in whatever shape you’d like.
  5. Squirt fake blood over the the mouth pieces, the center mouth, and your chin for a gory feel.

Once you’re done with the mask, feel free to apply paint and makeup to your face, neck, chest, and shoulders. For a visual aid, check out Ellimacs SFX Makeup’s “Stranger Things Monster Halloween Makeup Tutorial (open mouth).”
