The Boss Movie Review
Comedy powerhouse Melissa McCarthy is back in her newest comedy The Boss. Melissa and her husband Ben Falcone directed the film and wrote the screenplay for The Boss. This film is about a woman named Michelle Darnell, who is a multimillionaire. Everything seems to be going great for the CEO, until she is busted for insider trading and sent to federal prison. After leaving prison, Michelle is broke, homeless and hated by all of America. Her former assistant Claire (Kristen Bell) is the only friend she has and is willing to house her during her struggle. Claire’s daughter is a member of a local Girl Scout group. Michelle takes over the girl scouts and turns into a brownie empire. And there we have to plot of this very dull film. Okay, so I am big fan of Melissa McCarthy and really have enjoyed her in her last couple of films. But, this film really misses the mark. It did one major crime; it didn’t make me laugh at all. It is a comedy that I didn’t laugh at once. Melissa McCarthy is starting to turn into a predicable Hollywood actor that seems to be having up and downs with her acting career. Her last attempt at writing a film and staring in it was the 2014 snoozer, Tammy. Melissa McCarthy is good actress but she needs to stop writing her own films for Hollywood to produce unless she wants to keep loosing money. Last year she starred in the blockbuster film, Spy, written and directed by Paul Feig. She also will be starring in this years’ female reboot of the hit film Ghostbusters, under the directing of Feig. Maybe it is just me, but I am not a fan of McCarthy’s own written humor, but this her second strike with writing films. Kristen Bell is usually a pretty decent actress, but in this film she plays a boring down on her luck character that no one really cares for. To be honest, nothing really stood out to me in the film and the plot was all over the place. It feels like a bad SNL sketch. Mainly, I just feel like Melissa McCarthy deserves better. The Boss has gotten awful reviews. IMDb gave the film a 5.2, Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 20% and Metacritic gave the film 40%. The Boss opened in the number spot during it’s debut and quickly dropped to the bottom the box office after that. Currently, The Boss has earned $56,147,945. Overall, The Boss is a rough attempt at comedy and yet another miss for Melissa McCarthy. Wait for this one to come to RedBox The Boss is in theatres now and should be available on BluRay and DVD in July or August.
