The Jungle Book Movie Review
It’s a jungle out there! This film is the retelling of the beloved Disney film The Jungle Book with CGI and Live Action. As a fan of Disney, I personally do not remember watching The Jungle Book when I was a child. This film took me completely off guard plot wise, I did not know what was coming next. I truly enjoyed this film. When it comes to their live action retelling of movies, Disney is three for four in my books and this one truly does not disappoint. The Jungle Book is such a thrilling film and offers something for everyone. Raised by a family of wolves since birth, Mowgli must leave the only home he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger, Shere Khan threatens his family he loves. A bear and a panther guide Mowgli through the jungle of India, where he meets many animals including a slithery python and a smooth-talking ape. Along the way, Mowgli learns valuable life lessons through his life and how to survive in the jungle as a man cub. The film stays true to the original and keeps the iconic songs’, The Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be (Like You.) John Favreau, the director of the Iron Man film series, does some of his best work of his career. The casting is superb. Bill Murray plays Baloo the bear, Idris Elba plays Shere Khan the wicked tiger, and Scarlett Johansson plays Kaa, the snake. But the real star is the actor who plays Mowgli, 12-year-old Neel Sethi. Sethi is the one live performer in a computer-animated jungle world. He was an unlikely candidate for the Mowgli role, which involved an international search of 2,000 wannabe Mowglis. Then a 10-year-old (at the time) Indian-American growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side nails the role. He heard about the Jungle Book audition through a dance teacher who encouraged him to go. The entire film was shot in green screen and Neel had to react to all of the imaginary jungle characters without any actors by him. But, Favreau brought in puppeteers from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop so that Sethi had animal figures to act against. Mowgli and Bill Murray spend several hours of quality time together to get a real live bond between Baloo and Mowgli. The two performed the iconic song “The Bare Necessities” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Overall, The Jungle Book is a great film for every age. Audience’s can appreciate Neel Sethi’s performance as Mowgli and the great visuals of the Jungles of India. I hope Neel Sethi will receive an Oscar nomination for his fantastic performance in the film. The Jungle Book has received fantastic praise. With a 8.5 on IMDb, a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a opening weekend of $60 Million, the Jungle Book is another hit for Walt Disney Studios. The Jungle Book is in theatres now and will not be available on DVD and BluRay in early September.
