Zootopia Movie Review

You can finally let go of Frozen, and say hello to the new Disney classic, Zootopia. Zootopia is the story of a little bunny named Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, who grew up wanting to be a police officer. She strives to be something that differs completely from her small family business of carrot farming. She had high hopes for herself, and eventually makes her way to becoming a police officer in the wonderful Zootopia, a city much larger than her hometown. Zootopia is the wonderful city where predator and prey live in harmony. Judy soon realizes from a sly fox named Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman that Zootopia isn’t the fantastic city that she has dreamt about. Judy Hopps is sent on a mission to find missing animals, and the plot thickens as she and Nick are investigating the case. Without giving too much away, Zootopia really is unlike any animated film you will see this year. There is big underlining theme that deals with prejudice between predator and prey. Zootopia begins to slowly fall apart because of something officer Hopps addresses to the city. I don’t want to give away too much more of the plot because it is so original and creative that I do not want to spoil it for you. This film is so funny, original and overall a good time for any audience. I remember leaving the theatre thinking “Disney has done it again.” Walt Disney animation has had a string of hits recently. With Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6 and now Zootopia, Walt Disney is in it’s second coming of fantastic animation films. In 1989, Disney released The Little Mermaid. It followed a string of Disney Classics such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan. Disney fans have called 2009 to the present as “The Second Disney Renaissance” because of the fantastic animated films that have come from the studio. I personally am a huge fan of Disney and the studio has not disappointed with any of their recent releases and I believe that may be in the prime of their animation once again. Zootopia does something that most animated films do not do; it makes us think about or society and the prejudice that is in our everyday lives. This is a big topic for an animated movie to take on, and it does it brilliantly. Zootopia has remained the number one film at the box office for three weeks since it’s premiere. The film was only taken down by Batman vs. Superman in it’s forth week.  At the time of this article, Zootopia has made $209 million domestically, and $605 million globally. It is currently #2 film of 2016. Rotten tomatoes has given the film a 99% certified rating, IMDb gave it a 8.5 rating, and Metacritic gave it a 78%. Overall, Zootopia is a groundbreaking animated film and will remain a classic for years to come. You can see Zootopia in theatres now and expect it on BluRay and DVD in July 2016.
