Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

With the release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s time to look at the latest in DC Comic’s fighting video games Injustice: Gods Among Us. Developed in 2013 by NetherRealm Studios, the game pits several of DCs most memorable heroes and villains against each other in a Mortal Kombat style fighting game which not only is a great game for DC Comics fans, but for fans of fighting games as well.

The gameplay features a similar gameplay to that of NetherRealm’s flagship franchise Mortal Kombat in which two players (or one player and one computer) are pitted against each other to fight. Players are able to select from a list of characters each of which offer a diverse game style and move set meaning each player could play differently as each character. Each character also has moves and combos that are associated with that character such as Superman’s laser vision or Wonder Woman’s iconic lasso of truth. The stages also allow players to interact with them finding new ways to damage your opponent as you battle across well-known locations in the DC universe such as Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, Gotham City and the Justice League’s Headquarters the Watchtower.

The storyline of the game follows an alternate universe in which Superman has taken control of the world following The Joker’s attack on Metropolis. Meanwhile Batman and several other heroes have brought their counterparts from another universe in order to stop Superman. During the course of the story, players take the role of several different heroes such as Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow, and Superman and face off against other heroes and villains in an original story created exclusively for the game.

Like most fighting games there is also an online mode where players can take on other players across the globe and compete against each other in tournaments and different types of matches. Due to the game being around for about 3 years the servers are not as active as they used to be but there are still online servers available and sometimes people still play.

The game also features plenty of unlockable items and Easter eggs that are bound to make the player replay the game and try to unlock things such as new costumes and concept art. And with the iconic DC comics’ stages in the game, they are full of hidden references to comic books such as background characters, in universe companies, and iconic items. These references are sure to entertain even the most diehard comic book fan and will surly bring them back to see if there are things they may have missed before.

While the game features many positives there are a few drawbacks. One would be while the roster of the game is large, there are a few iconic characters that have been left out such as Hawkman, Mary Marvel, Supergirl, Reverse Flash, Darkseid, and Captain Cold. The characters are iconic in the DC Universe and could’ve worked if used in the game. Another drawback is the number of stages in the game. There are only a few playable stages in the game and while each stage is full of interactive items and provide enough room to fight, there are more stages that could fit into the game and would be interesting to see in the game.

So while audiences are seeing Superman and Batman square off on the screen, players can actually play through a fight between those two as well as fights between many other characters in DC Comics in this game that will satisfy any fan of DC Comics and even fans of fighting games in general.
