Spare Parts Review

A group of misfit kids try to win an underwater robotics competition; here is a premise I haven’t seen before. Spare Parts is the true story about a group of Latino high school students who won first place over MIT in the underwater robotics competition. I watched this film during my Spanish class recently and I really enjoyed it. I felt like the characters in the film were relatable and the actors really did well in their roles.  I gained a better understanding of how growing up in an underprivileged community could affect how others viewed you. The biggest moment that I took away from this film was the scene at the end of the film when one of the characters’ fathers came to California to see his son in the competition. I found this part to be very heartwarming because of the previous scene where he was very upset with him about his son and he still came to support him in the competition. What I learned from Spare Parts was the idea of even though the community that you come from as the odds against you, you can still beat them and strive to have a better life. By putting all these kids in robotics club, George Lopez kept them off of the streets and made them all strive for a one certain goal. I found it very cool that he donated his own money and made the arrangements just to get them to California to compete in this prestigious competition. He had faith in them that they were more than just average high schoolers and they would defy the odds. George Lopez plays a great character in this film, one of the best performances I have seen from him. Other standout actors include Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays the school’s principle and Alexa Vega and Carlos PenaVega. Alexa Vega is known for the Spy Kids series and Carlos is known for his role in the boy band Big Time Rush. The two play an on screen couple and the chemistry also last off screen as well, the two became a married couple in 2014. They play a very cute couple in the film and also in real life. Spare Parts was released in January 2015 to select theatres and grossed a mere $3, 618,912. The film had a mediocre rating from some websites. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 54%, IBDb gives it a 7.3 rating, and Metacritic gives it a 50%.  Overall, I really enjoyed this film and recommend others to see it they enjoy seeing an underdog come out on top in this true inspiring story. Spare Parts is available on DVD, Hulu and Amazon Video.
