Ride Along 2 Movie Review

After striking box office gold to the tune of $135 million in 2014, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are back as the goofy cops James Payton and his wannabe brother-in-law Ben Barber to do it all over again. In Ride Along 2, Kevin Hart’s character is just about to marry James’ sister, but Ice Cube has one more challenge for him to complete in order to gain his respect. In this film, they take all of the action that was once in Atlanta and bring it to Miami to stop a drug dealer who is supplying a whole community. For me, this film was just another comedy sequel that will not perform as its predecessor. I used to be a huge fan of Kevin Hart at the time when the first Ride Along came out in theatres, but now it just seems like he is content with playing the same sort of characters in all of his films. In these films, he plays the frantic high-pitched squirrel of man who easily becomes very whinny and annoying throughout the movie. I feel like Kevin Hart has the energy of a great comedic actor like Chris Rock, but he is just playing too into the fact that he is Chris Rock’s lookalike. The plot of this film is so similar to the first that it just proves the point that this film did not need to be made. A few new additions to the cast are Olivia Munn, who plays Ice Cube’s love interest who is a fellow Miami detective and Ken Jeong, who plays a criminal hacker who works with James and Ben. This film is just full of explosions and jokes that just don’t hit as well as the original did. There is a part of the film that is a car chase where it goes from reality and a grand theft auto lookalike video game backdrop.  If the goal of the movie was to make an action film, than this film succeeded, but they marketed this film as an action comedy, and it defiantly is not.  Also, this film seems to be longer than it really is because it just drags on with the same old shtick that just doesn’t work. Ride Along 2 tries very hard to be like 22 Jump Street but Cube and Hart’s chemistry and whit just don’t carry an entire film on it’s own. Overall, I would wait for Ride Along 2 to come out on DVD. It is a decent flick to rent through RedBox if you are into a semi-fun action movie and you are a fan of Kevin Hart’s humor. Ride Along 2 is in theatres now, but you can expect on BluRay and DVD in mid April 2016.
