San Andreas Movie Review
The Rock is once again a leading blockbuster hero. In the action thriller San Andreas, the Rock plays a search and rescue helicopter pilot who trying to save his daughter and all of the town after the California fault gives way. The Rock’s character has been recently divorced, and he has to team up with his ex-wife to find their daughter and her new friends before the area detaches.
This film reminded me of other disaster films like 2012, Twister, and The Day After Tomorrow.
The Rock gives a decent performance in this less than average film. Paul Giamatti stars as the scientist that predicts that the San Andreas Fault would give way, and he tries to inform the people that it is going to happen. Paul Giamatti is in a variety of popular movies. With Giamatti having roles in Saving Private Ryan, Straight out of Compton, Big Fat Liar and Rock of Ages, it seems like he is in a wide genre of films. This film will not go down in history as one of his greatest, but he definitely plays it to the best of his ability.
The suspense in San Andreas feels real and leaves you wanting the lead characters to make it out of the earthquake safe. Johnson’s daughter Blake is played by actress Alexandra Daddario, a newcomer who we are sure to see more of. Before San Andreas, Daddario starred as Annabeth in the Percy Jackson films.
This movie was made purely to be a summer blockbuster film to cater to fans of the Rock. It was intended to make a ton of money with special effects and little to no actual purpose. This is a popcorn action film for sure. The film banks off the fact that there are buildings falling down left and right and special effects everywhere. The first part of the film is decent and you feel like this film could possibly change up the disaster film genre, but after the earthquake first hits, the rest of it is completely formulaic and predictable.
While disaster films have become rather boring and predictable, the Rock has started to become a standard for a great action hero to have in every film. Last summer, the Rock starred as Hercules in yet another summer blockbuster. That film grossed only $72,688,614. San Andreas was more success than that film and crossed the $100,000,000 point.
San Andreas made $155,149,199 at the box office this summer. It was the ninth most successful film of summer 2015. The biggest problem that I had with this film was that it feels like it should have been released earlier than it did. This film belongs in the late 90s and early 2000s period of action films right along with Independence Day, Twister, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and so forth. If this film were on Netflix, I wouldn’t mind watching it. I enjoyed San Andreas for what it was, which is a mindless disaster film with some pleasures.
You probably won’t care about the characters except for the Rock because he is a popular actor. Any character that the Rock plays is likeable mainly because of who he is as a person. For the most part, he exceeded my expectations of him in the movie.
As long as you go into this film to have fun, you will get that out in return. Rotten Tomatoes rated the film just short of fresh with a 50%, and IMDB gave the film a 6.2 rating. Overall, San Andreas is a fun time for those who enjoy the disaster genre or are fans of Dwayne Johnson. San Andreas is available on DVD and BluRay, October 13th.
