Music Around the World
Nao doesn’t have a full album out, but she more than makes up for it in quality music. Her voice is powerful and soulful. It could be described as a mixture of the jazzy, breathy dance ignition articulation of Janet Jackson combined with the soul and uniqueness of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Her music is what I like to call “taking you to church” kind of music. When you hear Nao sing, her tone electrifies and surrounds you in calming, funky vibrations that puts you in a music haze from all the power and soul she exudes.
She is not afraid to experiment with elements and different techniques to creatively boost and supplement her superb vocals. You don’t just listen to her music, you experience it. The music takes you on an adventure down an electrical soul funk rabbit hole where you wish you could live forever and have her music play on a loop.
If you don’t know who Nao is, I suggest you take a gander at her music as soon as possible. She is a sistah rocking a voluminous fro from Hackney, London. She has a couple of EPs out, the first being “So Good,” which ending up being No.4 on the iTunes electronic chart and having 1.5 million plays on Soundcloud. She sold out her first two London shows in a matter of days, which allowed her to join Little Dragon, a Swedish group, on their 22 day European tour. She has received reviews that classify her as “nu-soul” and ‘90s R and B to classic funk and house. However, on her second EP titled “February 15,” it was clear she shifted her take on music to extend into a more abstract way of creating music.
“Inhale Exhale” is a radio hit in waiting with its strut and crisp energy of ’80s electro-funk. It immediately entices the listener as Nao launches into sick soulful vocals with her high, giddy voice and leaves no trace of her native London accent. “Zillionaire” has a quirky, fluctuating tempo to match the lyrics about being rich so she could fly into someone’s bedroom and love them until forever, even if the money runs out. “Apple Cherry” should be filed next to F.K.A. Twigs due to its delivery of a falsetto that is so silky it takes the song to a whole other level. This track has a hint of grunge and grit that is infectious and just makes you want to groove to the beat. “Golden” features an Edge of Seventeen guitar sample and the sound of crystals shattering. It’s out of this world mind-blowing yet oh so irresistible. “Adore You” is a graceful mid-tempo melodia that feels like an answer to Miguel’s instant classic “Adorn”.
Nao likes to play with many types and influences of music, like smoky neo-soul, muted washes of dubstep and other UK bass shifts, but she integrates them so seamlessly that the stylistic breadth is hardly noticeable. Nao’s vocals are so rich and subtle, and she distinctly knows when to tone it down and when to flex the power of her upper register. She doesn’t let the elements of the chords overpower her words. Nao’s lyrics are simple yet so calming and imaginative you can tell she cares about the details in her music. Nao’s music is a work of art and pure genius. Be sure to be on the lookout for more music from Nao as she just got signed to RCA records.
