Movie Review: Spy
Melissa McCarthy is back in a role that utilizes her greatest strength, to make people laugh. She’s relatable as well as hilarious. In Spy, McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a worker for the CIA. She helps her partner, Agent Bradley Fine, from her desk while he’s in the field. However, when a mission goes haywire, Susan has to step out into the field herself to find out who is threatening the CIA. The director Paul Feig, of Bridesmaids’ fame, writes and directs a very fun spy comedy that everyone can enjoy.
This movie has an R rating purely because McCarthy drops many curse words in a few scenes. There is a lot of violence when it comes to fight scenes. I really enjoyed seeing McCarthy play a character that is outside of the roles she usually plays. McCarthy has been falling into a cinematic rut by playing sloppy characters, such as her characters in Identity Thief or Tammy, which don’t primarily show her as the actress she truly is. It was nice change of pace to see McCarthy portray a smart and witty character in this film. Other actors include Jason Statham who plays a bumbling spy named Ford, Miranda Hart playing Susan’s best friend Nancy, and Jude Law playing Agent Fine.
Jason Statham, who nearly steals the show, compliments the social awkwardness in McCarthy’s character. The comedy in his character is based on how serious the actor manages to deliver his lines. Yes, McCarthy’s character is overweight in the film, but when you start to think about it, it stops being funny. There are so many jokes to her weight it becomes not only offensive but also annoying. The story improves with the arrival of Rose Byrnean, actress who seems to be able to do anything, who plays Rayna Boyanov. Her breezy, mean-girl putdowns are exquisitely underplayed. At one point, McCarthy buys a fancy gown, slips into a luxe casino and ends up saving Rayna’s life. As long as you can understand the jokes throughout the film are inappropriate for everyday use, you should be able to enjoy the film and the clever jokes made by these actors.
Spy is one of the best-rated comedies of the year. Currently the film has a 94% rating on rotten tomatoes and a 7.5 rating on IMDB. It is cleverly written with great performances. It kept me on my toes the whole time and left me wishing for more. It’s a comedy that was well thought out and was not only made to make a Hollywood studio money; though it did that as well. Spy was a huge box office hit this summer. The film’s thrills, laughs and atmosphere all worked together perfectly, and gives viewers a wonderful experience. I recommend watching Spy if you want to laugh and have fun with Melissa McCarthy for a few hours. Spy is on DVD and BluRay September 29th.
