Album review: Rodeo, It Was Worth The Wait

Jacques Webster, also known as Travi$ Scott, is a 23 year old rapper from Houston, Texas. Scott is signed to Very G.O.O.D Beats, which is a production wing under GOOD Music. This record label is founded by the one and only Kanye West, whose influence can be spotted throughout most of Scott’s latest music. Kanye has always been able to get amazing talents to sign under his label, such as Kid Cudi, CyHi the Prince and many more.

Just when you thought Hip Hop was dead, Scott released the fire that is known as Rodeo on Sept 4, 2015. The album was delayed and the release date was changed several times because Scott wanted Kid Cudi, the Day ‘n’ Night artist, on his album. When the release date was finally announced, Cudi tweeted that although he isn’t on the album everyone should support Scott because the album is about Scott not him. Kid Cudi is my favorite artist, so the news of him not being on the album did come as a bummer; however, I knew Scott would make up for it.

Rodeo has fourteen songs, in comparison to the deluxe edition, which has sixteen songs. Rodeo features a variety of artists such as The Weeknd, Chief Keef, 2 Chainz, Future, Juicy J, Schoolboy Q, Justin Bieber, Young Thug, and Chaz Bundick. Rodeo is a fantastic album, and as a fan of Travi$ Scott, you can really tell that he put his all into this album. The way this album comes together is interesting because of the way every song flows into the next smoothly. Jamming the album all the way through is probably one of my favorite past-times.

“Pray 4 Love,” featuring The Weeknd, is most definitely my favorite song on the album. I’ve probably replayed that track over 100 times in the span of a week. Scott is lyrical and a production genius. He is an artist that our generation can look to for a fresh inspirational outlook on Hip Hop. Although his lyrics can be a bit explicit at times, he is able to deliver his lyrics in a way where the listener has no choice but to turn up the volume and jam along. Once you mix the lyrical genius with another talented artist like The Weeknd you get a song that anyone could vibe with. Their artistic differences are clearly presented in this track, but the verses also complement each other. This collaboration carries out an amazing melody and downright crazy song.

“Maria I’m Drunk” is another track on Rodeo that combines popular pop artist, Justin Bieber, with Rap artist Young Thug. Those types of collaborations excite me as a fan. I love seeing artists step outside of their comfort zone and are versatile with their music.

This album is a classic in the making and is one of the best Hip Hop albums of 2015. As a huge fan of Scott I am excited and anxious to see what is in stores for his career and I hope he comes to Chicago so I can see him perform this album live.
