Music around the world: Felix Jaehn
While most 21-year-olds are just trying to get through college, Felix Jaehn is producing number one singles. Plus, he’s partly responsible for that song called Cheerleader that wont leave your head.
Felix Jaehn was born August 28, 1994 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. He began his DJ career at age 16. Jaehn briefly studied Business Administration at Humboldt-University in Berlin.
In August 2013, he released his debut single “Sommer am Meer.” But it wasn’t until 2014 when Jaehn had his first break. His remix of the Jamaican artist OMI’s song Cheerleader became an international hit. It charted number one in every country it was released in, including Germany, Australia, United Kingdom and the United States.
Jaehn specializes in tropical house music. Tropical house music is a subgenre of house music that emerged in 2010. Other artists who fall under the tropical house style are Kygo and Robin Schulz.
In April 2015, Jaehn released a remix of the classic Chaka Khan song “Ain’t Nobody Love Me Better.” The track included 14-year-old Jasmine Thompson, and became a number one hit in Germany and Austria.
Jasmine Thompson gained her popularity with that same cover of the song. Jaehn liked it so much he included it on his remake of the song. Recently, his free tracks and releases have been gaining a lot of attention by DJs, blogs and music enthusiasts all over the world. With a huge number of Sound Cloud plays and live shows in major cities like London and Berlin, the sky is the limit for Felix Jaehn.
The remix was an international pan-European hit topping the German Singles Chart. He is now signed to Universal Music. In July 2015 he released the single “Eagle Eyes.” In an interview with Forbes magazine, Jaehn said about his success “It’s totally amazing. I never expected it to be successful at all to be honest, and now it’s number one everywhere.”
When asked about his life before the smash cheerleader, he said, “I was doing a lot of bootlegs. I did a lot of remixes without having the authorization. I did everything from Tom Odell to Phil Collins. Everything I like. I’d make these bootlegs and put them up online and that’s how I started. Some record companies started to find me and ask me to do official remixes.”
He also has just remixed Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph,” and already remixed Avicii’s “The Nights” as well.
Jaehn said, “I’m doing remixes now for some of my idols, which is really great.”
Felix Jaehn may become one of the biggest and youngest producers of this decade. He has already proved he is capable of making big hits, and working with big artists. Now the sky is the limit for this 21 German producer. I’m excited to see what major hit will produce next.
