Video Game Review: The Last of US Remastered
There have been so many games that have included the use of zombies that most would expect a gamer to be tired of the same reiterated enemy. Fortunately, “The Last of Us” gives players a completely different experience.
The game originally released in June 2013 on the Playstation 3, and the remastered version released on Playstation 4 in July 2014. In the game, players follow the story of Joel, a man who has been fulfilling tasks for survival, but also causing the untimely deaths of others, and Ellie, a twelve year old girl who was born after the world’s collapse. The two make their journey though the zombie-infested U.S. fighting off the infected as well as non-infected people who may try and steal their supplies for their own gain.
The story is easily the most notable thing about the game because it jerks on player’s emotions to the extreme. The incredible dynamic bond shared between Joel and Ellie is unlike any video game duo ever seen. The characters start as acquaintances but eventually build a father-daughter relationship. Players will see that they really care for each other and will do even the most dangerous things for the safety of their partner. Players will also find themselves cheering for Joel, even though they know of his dark past.
The game never falls short of delivery, and each moment just gets better as the story progresses. The gameplay does an amazing job of keeping the player involved. Never is there a moment where the gameplay feels unexciting. The immersive world is another thing that players will have a big interest in. It takes place two decades after the infection stormed throughout the world. Players will see cities that slowly decayed, streets that have overgrown plants going through them, buildings with moss overtaking the exterior – the entire spectrum of a decaying world. It is an absolutely beautiful world, and an even better work of art. Since this is the updated version, the game also comes included with the additional content that was separated from the main game.
One of the content packs entitled, “Left Behind” gives players the story of Ellie before she ended up with Joel. It is a very emotional prologue that tells of Ellie’s friendship with her best friend, Riley. Their story takes place at a slowly decaying mall based in a quarantine zone. The two go off to discover things and have discussions while journeying. The voice acting is executed well and players will learn new things about both characters. The mall still has its fair share of danger and both Ellie and Riley will have to do their best to stay alive.
Overall, “The Last of Us Remastered” is an incredible piece of gaming that is heavily encouraged for Playstation 4 owners to get. The emotional story, gorgeous environment, superb voice acting, and intense gameplay, make this one of the best games this generation. It is a must buy.
