The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 has once again claimed the number one spot for the highest grossing film of the year. Coming in at a cool 333.2 million dollars, the third movie in the four film franchise just barely beat out Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy which earned 333.1 domestically, according to the media and fandom news website Hypable. The second film in the franchise, Catching Fire, also took home the prize of highest grossing film the year before. The article reports that this is the first time that a film with a solo female lead character has held the titular role in a top grossing film two years in a row. With Mockingjay Part 2 set to release this year, fans are wondering if the final film of the franchise can secure box office earnings again, and earn Jennifer Lawrence her third year of success. Mockingjay Part 2 is set to be released on Nov. 20 of this year.
Mockingjay isn’t the only film to succeed in box office earnings. American Sniper, which was released on Jan. 16, found more success than they expected at the box office. American Sniper is the true account based on Chris Kyle’s story as a Navy SEAL sniper who saved many lives with his skills. The film did well in its first weekend, making 91.7 million dollars. According to Vanity online, American Sniper now holds the title of the highest grossing January release. The film has seen both positive and negative reviews, but nonetheless the film as been nominated for six Oscars, including Best Film.
Speaking of the 2015 Oscars, which air on Feb. 22, some of the biggest category nominees are, Steve Carell in Foxcatcher, Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, Michael Keaton in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything for best actor. The list for best actress are, Marion Cotillard in Two Days, One Night, Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore in Still Alice, Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, Reese Witherspoon in Wild. The best supporting actors boast, Robert Duvall in The Judge, Ethan Hawke in Boyhood, Edward Norton in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Mark Ruffalo in Foxcatcher and J.K Simmons in Whiplash. Up for best supporting actress is Patricia Arquette in Boyhood, Laura Dern in Wild, Keira Knightly in The Imitation Game, Emma Stone in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), and Meryl Streep in Into the Woods. Lastly, best motion picture nominees include American Sniper, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash. The nominees for best animated feature include, Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
