Movie Review: Ouija
I’m sure you have seen at least one ad for the new movie “Ouija.” This movie has had ads everywhere from trailers and commercials, even to ads sent via Snapchat stories. Going into the theater, I was worried that it was not going to live up to the hype that it was getting- but it definitely did.
I’ll talk about moments that are shown in the trailers, so I don’t give any spoilers. The movie starts off with the character named Laine going to her friend Debbie’s house. As kids, they used to play with a Ouija board, but Debbie was the one who was intrigued by it. When Laine went over to her house late at night, she went to ask if Debbie was going to the basketball game. In return Debbie said no, that she was freaked out because she had played with the Ouija board again and that weird things were happening. She then told Laine to forget about it. Laine left Debbie’s to go the game like she had encouraged, and that night Debbie killed herself. After Debbie died, Laine was looking through her stuff and found the Ouija board.
Throughout the movie, Laine, her boyfriend Trevor, their friend Isabelle, Debbie’s boyfriend Pete and Laine’s sister Sarah try to find answers through the Ouija board, thinking that it is Debbie talking to them. Throughout the movie, a lot of ominous things happen to the five of them, and they try to close what Debbie opened with the Ouija. It all starts with two words: “Hi friend.”
This movie had me on the edge of my seat. I never jump at movies, but I have to admit that this one got me a few times. They had great effects and the way they played carried out was great and realistic. Some horror movies are afraid to go a little out of the box, but this one was not and they really did a great job. There were two times that I thought the movie was over, but it was not. It kept twisting and turning as the plot thickened.
Overall, the movie was a lot better than I had anticipated. It had gotten so much hype, and most movies that have all of the advertising are never as good as they make it out to be; this one threw me for a loop. It was very entertaining and did not have an ending that anyone could possibly guess, which I love in a horror movie. Most horror movies are very predictable and follow the same plot, but not “Ouija.” I would have to say it is one of the greater horror films I have seen in a while, and I highly encourage you to go see it. It came out in theaters on Oct. 24.
