Movie Review: Annabelle

Who is not afraid of a possessed doll? No one. That is why I decided to review “Annabelle” this week for the movie review.

The movie started off the same way “The Conjuring” did. It starts off with two girls in their twenties, talking about how the doll moves independently from room to room when they are gone. Then the movie flashes back to the people who owned her before these two girls did. Basically, a pregnant woman has a doll collection for her child that she is expecting, though the sex of the baby is unknown. Since she and her husband have been having disagreements, he buys her new doll to complete part of her collection, as peace offering. This of course, is the Annabelle doll.

The viewer will find out who possessed the doll and how exactly it happened throughout the film. This movie has a lot of cult references and even shows a demon. The demon was very reminiscent of “Insidious.” It was cheesy-looking, as well were the effects and music at the suspenseful scenes. I was expecting to be a lot more scared than I ended up being, but I did jump every once in a while.

At the end, they showed a clip of how the doll was given to the girls that talk in the beginning, setting it up for a sequel with the girls. The creepiest part is that it is a true story; there is a possessed doll named Annabelle that is a life-size Raggedy Ann doll.

All of the possessed items that the Warren family has collected are in an occult museum in Monroe, Conn. along with the real Annabelle doll. Annabelle is held in a glass case with a sign on it that says “WARNING: Positively do not open.” Apparently, this Annabelle doll growls when you walk by her, and at night when the lights are off, she bangs on the glass and growls. The museum is open to visitors. Although some parts were cheesy, I think that Annabelle is a pretty good scary movie. It was not what my expectations were, so you may just want to wait until it comes out on Netflix or Redbox. But if you want to see it in theaters, it came out on Oct. 3.
