Movie Review: The Maze Runner

Imagine waking up in a moving box shooting you to somewhere unknown, and then when you finally reach your destination, there are people just laughing at you from the other side. You later realize that you are blocked in by walls. That is what happened to Thomas at the beginning of “The Maze Runner.”

Although I did not read the book, I thought this was a truly great movie. When Thomas is let out of the box by all these boys he has never seen, they all laugh as they watch him try to run away. They say that they get a new boy every month to the day and they call them the “Greenbean” and then shortly after shorten it to “Greenie.” Once out of the box, none of them remember anything from before the point of being in the box. Their name returns to their memory in day or so. As Thomas runs, he realizes there is no way out. They are surrounded by walls, except for an opening which the boys would not let him go into. They told him that there was a hierarchy among the boys and that only the strongest and the fastest get to go out there. The boys told Thomas that the “runners” have to be back before sun down. The boys were located was in a grassy area, which they called “the Glade,” and every day a few boys run out into the maze mapping a way out. Thomas was curious and wanted to see if he could find the way. Thomas soon learned that the reason it was so dangerous was because at sundown the opening shuts, and the maze changes throughout the night. The maze is never the same the next day, which is why they still haven’t found a way out after three years. There were things in the maze called “grievers” which were these ginormous spiders; if they stung you, you would get a disease that made you attack other members of the group. If a person was stung they would force him back out into the maze before sundown, because no one has ever made it through the night.

This amazing thriller keeps the audience on the edge of their seat throughout the whole movie. “The Maze Runner” is full of suspense and constantly keeps the audience guessing. Through the twists and turns of the movie you begin to form attachments to characters as they go through their countless journeys. This is a truly great movie that I highly encourage you to go see. If you do plan on seeing it, note that it is a book series! There are two more books after “The Maze Runner,” as well as a prequel. If you want to go see the movie, make sure you want to be hooked to see the others after it as well! I highly encourage going to see it, and it is out in theatres now.
