What do you mean when you say [sounds of rain]?

Are you referring to the overflow
of gutters gushing waterfalls to slosh
into anthills?

Do you mean instead the constant drip of
thousands of leaky faucets in the sky?

Or maybe instead you mean the confident
drip of drops much larger than they first fell—
who have gathered on yellow leaves
because they are too scared to meet the earth
alone.

And are you aware enough to know the difference?
