Album Review
If you like Boys Like Girls and All Time Low, you will love 5 Seconds of Summer. This group has a boy band feel, but their sound is more conducive to a 90’s punk rock band. Amnesia, their latest song, has an alternative, contemporary twist.
The band originated from Australia, so they have the appeal of an out of country sound, similar to One Direction. Starting their career off young, all members are under the age of 21. Front man Luke Hemmings and guitarists Michael Clifford and Calum Hood are 18 and drummer Ashton Irwin is 20.
The band started in 2011 when Hemmings started posting cover videos on YouTube, including The Fray’s “You Found Me,” “A Drop in the Ocean” by Ron Pope and Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.” The other band members joined after meeting at their school, Norwest Christian College in Sydney.
5 Seconds of Summer announced their support of One Direction on their worldwide tour Take Me Home on Feb. 14, 2013. Kicking off in the O2 Arena in London, the band joined One Direction for shows in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and New Zealand.
On break from the tour with One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer returned to their home in Australia to play a National headlining tour, with all dates selling out within minutes. From that moment on, their popularity only grew. They announced their debut album on May 13 of this year.
So the album, 5 Seconds of Summer, is a great album. Including songs such as “She Looks So Perfect,” “Don’t Stop,” “Good Girls” and “Voodoo Doll,” this album is full of music that will make you want to get up and dance. Take some time to step away from your homework and give them a listen.
