For the past couple months, I’ve been telling you what Bollywood has already done, concentrating on sharing its rich history with all of you. While, goodness knows, that that history can and has filled a number of books, Bollywood is not only past, but present and future. In one hundred years, the industry hasn’t slowed down a bit, but become bigger and brighter and better known. By all appearances, it’s going to continue that way for the next hundred years.
If you’d like to stay on top of the Bollywood happenings in the forthcoming months, be sure to catch “Gunday” which will star several of my favorites, most notably Arjun Kapoor. Arjun will be playing a gangster and if previous Bollywood gangster flicks are anything to judge by, this film should be great (Bollywood gangster flicks are a personal favorite of mine). Judging by the trailers and teasers, all of which are available to watch on YouTube–although not all of which have subtitles–the film should be fun, colorful, and action-packed. It’ll be hitting theaters in February and, if you do a little digging, you may even be able to find a place to catch it on the big screen around here.
Bollywood has also caught the sequel bug, with several of the upcoming films of next year being follow-ups to other filmic successes. Madhuri Dixit will make her comeback in “Dedh Ishqiya” which is the sequel to “Ishqiya.” She is as beautiful and talented as ever in the trailers, which themselves are quite aesthetically pleasing, featuring wonderful clothes and a delightful camera sensibility.
“Shaadi Ke Side Effects” will, hopefully, outperform its predecessor “Pyaar Ke Side Effects.” The leads should help nicely to achieve those ends, as Farhan Aktar and Vidya Balan are both extremely talented. The trailer is fun, funny and full of very sexy moments between the leads, and if the song it is set to is anything to go by, the soundtrack sound be great.
By and large the most anticipated film coming up is “Dhoom 3.” The first Dhoom movie was released in 2004 and its much better sequel “Dhoom 2” (which you can find on Netflix and should definitely watch post haste) was released two years later, making it seven years since the world has seen a Dhoom film. That wait plus the casting of Aamir Khan, who has stayed away from box office flicks in the recent past, as the villain opposite Katrina Kaif, a rising star in Hindi films, likely contributes the most to the hype. If you’d like a reason (or several) to be excited about this film, check out the song “Dhoom Machale Dhoom” on YouTube, being sure that you’re watching the one from “Dhoom 3” as doing a “Dhoom Machale” song has become a tradition in the series.
There are more great films coming out than these and if you’ll keep a weather eye on the horizon (and on Netflix), you’ll be able to catch them all. Go forth and watch, Millikids!
