Tumblr: Yay or Nay

When it comes to Tumblr, I lean a little more to the “yay” side. That’s not to say that one foot isn’t in the “nay” side. Because there is one, there is a whole foot in that side. Now, no one has ever asked me the question “hey what’s so great about Tumblr?” I’ve had people ask me things along the lines of “what is Tumblr for,” or “what is Tumblr about?” I’m here to tell you, my attentive and numerous readers, that Tumblr isn’t really “about” any one thing. My Tumblr, because yes of course I have one, is filled with things about my favorite shows and a lot of cat videos. So Tumblr can literally be about anything you want it to be about. It can keep you up on your favorite celebrities, television shows, fashion, etc. You can follow art blogs and admire how amazing some artists are. You can follow political blogs and rant about social issues and the economy. You create your own blog in a way that gains followers, attention, and reblogs.

Tumblr is a great way to be introduced to new things, although some of those things are not the best things. It’s a way to broaden your views a bit and see what others have to say on certain issues. You may even agree with those people.

You can meet new people, make new online friends and message each other into the early hours of the morning until one or both of you fall asleep. Tumblr is a great way to get your thoughts and opinions out there for everyone else to see.

But not everyone will like those thoughts and opinions. When posting your thoughts on any kind of social media, you run the risk of getting some serious backlash. Sometimes it can’t be avoided. But on Tumblr, sometimes that backlash can be a little much. You see, on Tumblr, no one knows who you are. Your identity, for the most part, is unknown. Unlike other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. So, since no one knows anyone, people give you all they’ve got and then some. There are death threats, insults, lengthy paragraphs on how wrong and ugly someone is. Tumblr users can get really hardcore sometimes, and it is scary. It is scary how posting something as trivial as “I think this picture is pretty” can cause so much uproar that a person would have to leave the site. People are mean. You will encounter mean people on every single social media site in existence. They are unavoidable.

So yeah, Tumblr does have its bad parts. Like bullies and jerks and know-it-alls. You can’t run the risk of scrolling through your feed in public without someone looking over your shoulder and seeing porn on your dash. Believe me, no matter what you do, there will be porn on your dash. Even if all you follow are Disney princess blogs, you are going to be scrolling innocently through your blog one day and you will come across a picture of a princess in a certain position that will scar you for life. But overall, I think Tumblr’s cool. You can find new things, meet new people, and get your word out there and become a part of the conversation. Also, if you’re a nerd like me, it is a great place to get fanfic recommendations.
