Millikin Announces Snow Day

February 1, 2022

In an email to students, Millikin announced a campus closure for Wednesday. This closure does not come as a surprise to campus. An email sent out Monday around 2 p.m. revealed the potential for the closure.

Campus is expected to resume operations on Thursday, though it is not guaranteed.

While campus is shut down, professors and students should not expect to meet via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. The on-campus COVID testing site has been suspended. Essential services such as Public Safety and the Dining hall in the University Commons will remain fully operational.

Students are asked to not park on emergency snow routes as the city trucks need to keep these paths clear for travel. Vehicles parked in these locations are subject to be towed.

While typical campus operations have been halted, students can still participate in recreational activities outside.

The email is listed below:

Dear Millikin Campus Community:

As many of you are aware, Central Illinois is in a Winter Storm Warning due to an advancing severe winter storm. As of this morning (Tuesday, February 1st) at 10:00 AM, the prediction is for a glazing of ice this evening with snow amounts during the day on Wednesday in the range of 10 inches. While there may not be much snow on the ground on Wednesday morning, it is highly likely that snow will continue throughout the day, making travel hazardous. The amount of snow predicted will make it difficult for the city and campus to keep up with clearing streets and walkways on and around campus.

As such, Millikin University will suspend normal campus operations for Wednesday, February 2nd due to inclement weather.  Administrative offices will be closed, and all scheduled in-person classes, virtual classes, campus and student organizational events, practices (athletic, music, and theatre), and meetings are cancelled.  Additionally, the SHIELD Testing Clinic will be closed.  We are asking all those who are not essential to campus operations to stay at home tomorrow and not to try to come to work.  Millikin employees designated as essential to campus operations, including student services, facilities/grounds, public safety, and dining services will report to campus as directed by their supervisors.

Students with meal plans are reminded that campus dining will remain in operation.  They will be following their weekend hours of service (11:00 AM-1:00 PM and 5:00 PM-6:30 PM) during this time of modified operations.  Members of our Facilities team will be working to keep the sidewalks leading to the UC walkable and parking lots plowed and would appreciate your help, so please refrain from driving to campus for meals if at all possible.

The University will continue to monitor the situation and keep the campus community updated about operations for Thursday, February 3rd as we gain additional information about the expected duration of hazardous conditions during the day on Wednesday.

Please stay safe during this time of inclement weather!

Respectfully,

Jim R
