Netflix Nostalgia

As college students, we understand a lot of things: eating, running off little to no sleep, just how much homework we can do the night before and the importance of our subscriptions to Netflix.

For this week’s Netflix review, I want to talk about one of the better opportunities that Netflix provides us with: nostalgia. We all grew up watching a myriad of TV shows, cartoons and movies. Television was a huge part of growing up in the nineties.

We all have the shows we watch contently on Netflix, like “Orange is the New Black,” “How I Met Your Mother” and all of those other good shows that are put up. But sometimes you are either out of stuff to watch, or you just aren’t feeling like watching your normal shows. I know that for me, I often like to just have my Netflix on for noise while I do my other work or chores.

That’s where Netflix nostalgia comes in. There’s a plethora of things to watch from our youth. Some of it we probably haven’t seen since we watched it on tape or came home after school to catch on the local channels. Shows such as “Chicken Run,” “Rugrats in Paris: The Movie,” “An Extremely Goofy Movie,” “Pokemon,” “Hercules” and “Flubber”are just a few.

The other day, I had a half hour to kill, and that’s when I clicked on “Rugrats in Paris.” I knew I wouldn’t have time to watch it all, but I just wanted something that wasn’t so much college and a little more elementary. Quickly, I found myself laughing at all of the jokes and references that went over my head the last time I watched this movie back in 2000. It ultimately became a great 30 minutes of an otherwise busy and stressful day.

It also makes for a great bonding experience. A few weeks prior, some friends and I were killing sometime and decided to watch “Chicken Run,” and it took us back to a time when our lives were a little simpler. Like my “Rugrats in Paris” experience, I found myself laughing at all the jokes that I was too naive to catch in my younger years. Netflix also features other hidden gems such as movies like “The Thief and the Cobbler” and “Hey Arnold: The Movie.”

The truth is, Netflix has a bunch of great shows to watch, but nothing quite beats relaxing to a movie that used to be one of your favorites. It’s a great way to blow off steam after a stressful day, or just to have on while you multitask. It gives you and your friends the chance to laugh at all the adult humor hidden within, and quote the lines you thought were hilarious when you were younger.

So if you are ever searching for something to watch, make sure you are paying attention to the categories aimed at younger kids. You might just find yourself saying, “I haven’t seen this since I was in grade school!”
