First World Problems

To those who are viewing this article, what are the foremost causes of stress on your life? Those stresses can range from both one extreme to another, and almost feel universally felt by similar people.  Although it can be perspective changing, how one aspect of someone’s life that causes them a great deal of stress, and again to reiterate this may be felt by many other people of a society.  There are many different stress factors, generally speaking, that are felt by different groups of people throughout the world.

Let’s take into account what the most common stress factors for students at Millikin University and what causes those stresses to rise. To me, the most general types of stress that students of Millikin University fall into 3 categories. To me, those stresses can be described as the cost of going to college (taking into account that many students of Millikin University may have to live in The Woods), the difficulty of performing well scholastically, and making just enough money to provide one with enough financial support to just get through the first leg of adulthood. Although many if not all of students attending Millikin University may feel these stresses, it can very easily be that these factors of stress are not just singularly a Millikin University thing, but these are stresses faced by all college students across the nation.

It’s no secret attending some type of college or university has become almost a necessity to secure a decent living this day in age, millions of young adults across America are feeling the pressure. Again, because of the cost of college, which has been highlighted heavily in the media as well as a main issue of politics during the current election, as well as having to take into account the stress of having to get decent grades in order to graduate college, this becomes a societal stress factor.

Nevertheless, when looking at a larger scale concerning our nation, one stress factor that is not just felt by college students is money.  We are currently in a difficult economic climate that has consumed our nation for several years, that has affected millions of Americans where they must take into account there spending, making budgets, and whatnot in order to ensure a prosperous life.

Although America can be seen as having a greater stress factor considering both money and college. This can also be seen as a global stress factor effecting not only the United States but effecting almost all citizens living in a first world country. Nevertheless, evaluating what makes others living in a first world country become stressed out can be enlightening. This enlightenment gives up a glimpse at what other countries who are not as developed as we are feel. This can even be felt on a smaller scale, specifically towards those living in bad conditions even in a first world country. Take into account what has happened to those living in Flint, Michigan currently. Those who are currently occupying the city, which historically has been largely affected by poverty, are now unable to obtain water that is suitable for drinking. This cause of stress concerning those not in Flint, Michigan and similar situations does not affect us who don’t even see this as a problem. The majority of United States citizens have no problem obtaining water that is suitable to use, whether it be for one to replenish themselves or for washing themselves or their clothes.

For example, readers should take into account how others living in more underdeveloped countries are surviving or at least trying to survive in poor conditions and how they are dealing with their climate. For instance, think about the young girls and women living throughout Africa going about their lives with the fear of being rapped. Also ponder how the Syrian refugee with a family to feed cannot find a suitable home, and all the countless others struggling to survive.
